Is Your Home Protected Against a Roof Leak?

By | Roof Inspection, Roofing | No Comments

Your home is most likely, one of the largest – if not the largest – investments you’ve ever made. That’s why it’s important to ensure that it’s maintained and structurally sound, especially if it’s an older build. That includes your roof. Out of sight, out of mind isn’t always a good thing, as we can easily disregard the maintenance of crucial areas until it’s too late. If your roof springs a leak, it can be a major headache for you, and a costly repair. So here are a few tips to help you ensure that your home is protected against a leaky roof.

Clean Your Gutters

It’s often the simple things in life that can make all the difference, and that goes for your roof. During those long winter months, a lot of debris and junk can easily accumulate through your gutters, preventing proper drainage. Without proper drainage, rainwater can easily accumulate and pool in areas along the roof, weakening it over time.

Every spring, hire a contractor, or grab a handy friend and a ladder to clean out those leaves. While you’re at it, it’s a good opportunity to evaluate the state of your gutters and downspouts. Does rainwater flow as it should safely away from your home? Are they are any missing, broken, rusted, or otherwise damaged sections that should be replaced or repaired? Now is the perfect time to take care of this important maintenance task before the cold weather returns.

Trim Tree Branches

In addition to cleaning out your gutters, you may also want to take a look at your trees. If there are any branches that are hanging over your roof and gutters, it may be worth trimming them back to reduce the amount of debris that can accumulate and eventually leading to pooling water. Small animals like squirrels and racoons also use tree branches to climb onto your roof and squeeze their way into your attic if there are any holes, so trimming tree branches is also important for this reason. If upon inspection you notice signs of rot or any other concerns with the tree, you may want to investigate removing the tree altogether to keep your home safe.

Reseal the Edges

Along the edges and vents of your roof are what are called flashing and pipe boots. These materials are crucial for waterproofing your roof and preventing leaks. It’s a good idea to check them out each year and reseal them. All it requires is some additional caulking and epoxy to do the job. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself, hiring a professional roofer to reseal it for you is always a worthy investment that may save you a lot of money in the long run.

Roof Inspection

Finally, at least every two or three years, you should hire a roof inspector to take a thorough look at the status of it. This way you can potentially avoid any nasty surprises and costly repairs. Otherwise, you may be left with far more advanced roof problem that requires more costly and expensive repairs that you may have been able to avoid with an ounce of prevention.

Keeping on top of your roof maintenance is the best way to avoid leaky surprises. Always perform annual checks. Don’t let debris accumulate in the gutters, and trim extending tree branches when necessary. Reseal the edges after each winter, and always get a professional to inspect it every few years.

The Advantages of Wakefield Bridge Steel Shingles

By | Blog, Roofing | No Comments

Most homeowners are aware of the fact that they are inevitably going to have to repair or completely replace their roof at some point, regardless of the traditional construction materials used throughout.

The overwhelming majority of traditional roofing materials are going to break down in any climate in about 10 or 15 years, meaning that over 30 years of home ownership you’ll have to replace your shingles and your roof at least twice – if not more, depending on the specific environmental conditions in your area, etc.

Thankfully though, there are other modern construction materials available that are more durable, and boast a longer lifetime than materials of the past. One of our favourite roofing materials are the Wakefield Bridge steel shingles. These roofing construction materials provide incredibly long-lasting durability (50 years or more compared to 10 or 15 years with more tradition shingles), at a similar price point.

Some homeowners are hesitant to try these new building materials, as they haven’t heard of them and aren’t sure if they will provide the performance they boast. We want to help you realize all of your options, and make sure you understand the advantages of new materials. Let’s break down some of the biggest advantages that Wakefield Bridge steel shingles have to offer.

Incredibly attractive and lightweight

The first thing that you are going to notice about Wakefield Bridge steel shingles is that they have been designed and engineered from the ground up to provide you with a beautiful home aesthetic that surpasses even the most high-end traditional materials.

Steel shingles have come a long way – they are now available in a wide variety of designs, finishes and colours that will compliment any exterior home design. Many people don’t think of the roof as an option in elevating the design of the home exterior, but a unique roof can help bring your design to the next level and turn your home into the envy of the neighbourhood.

Boasting a beautiful design, Wakefield Bridge steel shingles are also a lot lighter in weight compared to more traditional roofing materials (at least 60% lighter when compared to your average asphalt shingles covering the same area). This means you’ll put tremendously less stress on your home, which is a positive factor in maintaining the integrity of your home’s structure.

Durable protection against environmental factors

The major difference between Wakefield Bridge steel shingles and traditional asphalt shingles is that they are produced out of long-lasting steel components that will remain weatherproof for 50 years or more – 4 to 5 times longer than more traditional options.

Wakefield Bridge steel shingles are very durable and will stand up to the many wiles Mother Nature can unleash upon your home – wind, rain and hail, snow and ice, heat and prolonged exposure to the sun; steel shingles will withstand it all far more effectively than more traditional shingle materials. Wakefield Bridge steel shingles are tested to resist winds over 241 km/h or 150 mph and will stand up to the fiercest storms imaginable.

Wakefield Bridge steel shingles also boast premier rust resistance thanks to their unique corrosion coating; triple layered and baked on for the highest level of protection on the market.

Consider Wakefield Bridge steel shingles for your next roof upgrade – a tested product that you can trust to protect your home against the elements for decades to come.

Spring Cleaning and Your Roof

By | Blog, Roof Inspection, Roofing, Seasonal | No Comments

With spring comes house maintenance and repair season as homeowners from around Canada emerge from the colder weather to see if their homes require any maintenance. One of the most often overlooked parts of the home is the roof. Simply put, people tend to follow the mantra of “out of sight, out of mind” a little too often when it comes to their roof. As a result, Ottawa roofers notice that smaller problems often go undiagnosed until they become much larger and costlier to repair. Stop yourself from falling into this trap by spending your spring cleaning making sure your roof is in good working order. Below are a few key areas you can focus on to judge the effectiveness of your roof and see if you need any repairs.

Check The Ceilings Of Your Highest Floor

If your house is two floors tall, then go to the second floor. Check the ceiling and where the walls meet for signs of water damage. In addition, keep an eye out for plaster tape pulling away from the ceiling/walls. Both of these are signs that there is water and moisture damage that may be working its ways past your attic and into your second floor.

Check The Ceiling Of Your Attic

Investigate your attic and check for light coming in from outside. See if there is any moisture damage and check for mold that may result from moisture. Also, a weakness in the ceiling may cause temperature changes so stay aware of that.

Inspect The Roof

Get on the roof and remove any debris you see. Check a few test shingles to see how they are doing and look for peeling, hardening, and discolouration. In addition, take the opportunity to clear out your gutters. Call in a professional if you are uncomfortable with this.

Clear Area Around The Roof

Do your roof a favour and reduce the likelihood of impacts by trimming back your trees. Bushes, trees, and other things that may overhang your roof pose a direct risk to your home. Cut them back and have greater peace of mind.

Consider Calling a Roofing Contractor

If nothing else, you may want to consider getting a roofing contractor. Some will offer a free consultation and will inspect your home without cost. They will inform you as to any leaks or damage as well as provide a quote for whatever the services would cost for roof repair. If nothing else, having a trained and professional opinion could provide you with new insight into the nature of the repairs you may have to make.

It’s nice to know that you’re only going to have to invest in a brand-new roof once in your lifetime – rather than changing out your roofing shingles every ten years or so with more budget-focused and short-term solutions. What is the Best Metal Roof Colour?

By | Metal Roofing, Roofing | No Comments

If you have already committed to making sure that your next roof is going to be a metal roof, you are a couple of steps ahead of the game.

Some of the most affordable, beautiful, durable, and efficient roofs available on the planet, metal roofs are constructed from a diverse range of roofing materials. Whether made of steel or aluminium, a new metal roof promises the kinds of benefits that you’re looking for – the kinds of benefits that you as a homeowner deserve – and will add a considerable amount of value to your property at the same time.

Of course, just because you have elected to go with metal roofing material doesn’t mean that your decisions are over.

Not by a longshot.

There are quite a few different things you’re going to need to take care of when you decide to move forward with this roofing material, not the least of which is choosing the right colour of metal roofing material for your project.

Here are just a couple of helpful tips and tricks to get you started down the right path. Take advantage of this inside information and you won’t have any trouble whatsoever finding the best metal roof colour for you!

Let’s dive right in.

What’s hot right now?

As with any other home design element, there are definitely going to be some roofing material colours that are “hotter” than others right now – and that might be the direction that you’re looking to go in.

This is especially true if you want your home to look very modern and very contemporary, all without having to worry about whether or not this look is going to be quite as stylish in the years to come.

Metal roofs are going to be the norm in the future – just because of all the combined benefits they are able to bring to the table – and these colours are likely to remain “hot” for years and years to come.

Which metal roof colours look best with your home?

Of course, you’d have to be at least a little bit crazy to pick metal roofing material colours based entirely off of the “hot” colours without first considering how those colours are going to go with the look and style of the home they will be installed on.

Really consider the architecture and the style of your home, and especially the colour of your siding, your shutters, your doors, etc. to get a feel for whether or not this roofing material is going to blend in seamlessly. Or will it create an odd juxtaposition that throws things off? There is a fine line between tasteful contrast and clash.

Consider the energy efficiency of specific colours as well

A lot of people are surprised to learn that the colour of the metal roofing that they decide to move forward with will have a tremendous impact on their energy bills, but upon closer consideration it isn’t all that surprising after all.

You see, darker roofs are going to attract more light and more heat – and that means that your home is going to be warmer (especially in the upper levels). This might not be a bad idea if you live in a cold climate city like Ottawa, but if you live in warmer areas this could be big trouble.

At the same time, lighter colour roofs are going to reflect a more heat and more light – which may be picture-perfect in warmer climates, but if you live in Ottawa it is a valid concern in the winter.

When choosing your metal roof cover, energy efficiency is definitely something to consider!

Whatever you do, be careful about going with certain shades of blue

At the end of the day, regardless of the colour of roof that you decide to go with, you’ll really want to think long and hard about going with certain shades of blue.

Though it can be interesting to choose shades of blue that go nicely with the colour of the sky, you might end up with an “invisible” sky blue roof – and that can have your home looking very odd indeed!

For all your metal roofing needs in Ottawa, Lucas Contracting is here to help. We are experts in metal roof installation, steel roof repair, commercial metal roofing, shingle replacement, and much more. Get in touch to book a roof inspection, repair, or installation!

Why You Should Choose Steel Roofing

By | Metal Roofing, Ottawa, Roofing | No Comments

If you’re interested in obtaining new roofing for your home in the Ottawa area, you should consider steel roofing. Metal roofs have a lot of advantages, one of which is their durability. These roofs are built to last and some metal roofs continue to deliver exceptional performance and protection after a century or more. This is in contrast to roofs made from other materials. For example, if you opt for asphalt shingles, your new roof may not last for more three decades even with optimal care.

Steel Roofing Facts

Steel roofs are strong, aesthetically appealing, and affordable. While they may cost more than comparable roof materials, their ruggedness and durability make them a good investment over the long term. Also, some roof materials are more expensive than steel roofing, including clay, cedar, and slate. So, opting for steel doesn’t mean that you’ll be spending an exorbitant amount on new roofing.

Your steel roof should have two to three times the longevity of roofs which are crafted from other materials. Since steel isn’t organic, it won’t biodegrade and it will resist UV light. As long as a steel roof is installed perfectly by an Ottawa roofing company, it will remain securely in place. The wind won’t carry away steel panels, whereas the wind is a significant concern for homeowners with asphalt shingle roofs.

Steel roofs are also advantageous because they resist fire. When fires break out, houses may be destroyed or damaged. Steel won’t burn. It’s not a combustible material and it is rated Class A for fire safety.

Metal roofs are also more lightweight than most people realize. In fact, they weigh less than roofs crafted from asphalt. Unlike other types of roofing, steel won’t get heavier when it’s wet, so the weight of a steel roof will remain consistent over time.

Why a Steel Roof Is Your Best Choice

Hopefully, our guide to the hard facts about steel roofs will help you to move closer to a decision about what to buy. The truth is that steel roofs have very few drawbacks. Let’s explore the possible downsides of option for a metal roof, and why they shouldn’t be seen as a big concern:

  • Steel is susceptible to dents caused by hail, ice, and debris hitting the roof. Still, dents in steel are typically easy to repair.
  • One fear people have about choosing a steel roof is that the material might be noisy. Think of the sound of raindrops pinging off a metal barn roof – not exactly quiet. When your metal roof is installed with a solid sheathing, however, it dampens the sound of rain and hail even more effectively than other roofing products.
  • Finally, it is true that upon initial installation steel roofing is more expensive than some roofing products. However, it is still more affordable than clay or slate, and considering its longevity and the fact that metal roofing is virtually maintenance-free, it is a smart investment.

The key to minimizing the drawbacks is choosing installation by a quality roofing company in Ottawa like Lucas Contracting. We have years of experience with steel roof installation and have installed, maintained, and inspected metal roofs on homes and properties all throughout the Ottawa area including Barrhaven, Kanata, and Orleans.

At Lucas Contracting, we carry the best metal roofing products on the market. Decra Roof Systems products come in a wide range of colours, textures, and styles including tile, shake, and shingle. We also carry Wakefield Bridge shingles, produced by Ottawa’s own Ideal Roofing. Give us a call and we’ll evaluate your roof and help you choose the best steel roofing product for your needs, tastes, and budget. Make your home look its best in 2016!

Why It’s Important to Maintain Your Gutters & Downspouts in the Fall

By | DIY, Roofing, Seasonal | No Comments

You can’t wait to clean your gutters when you notice a problem, but by then it’s too late.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what too many otherwise smart and savvy homeowners out there end up doing. They then end up spending a lot more on home repairs than they anticipated. If all you do this year is clean out your gutters and your downspouts before the fall, you will usually be able to save yourself a tremendous amount of headache and hassle (at the very least). You’ll also save yourself a good chunk of change in repair expenses, as well.

Here are just a couple of reasons that you will want to maintain your gutters and your downspouts before the chilly and snowy winter season comes to Ottawa.

It’s called “fall” for a reason!

Sure, you’ll always come across people that refer to this season as autumn, but all over the country people call this season fall. It’s easy to see why when you begin to notice all of the leaves that come tumbling down as the weather cools.

Well, when those leaves come drifting down, the odds are pretty good that they are going to fall right down your roof and start to collect in your gutters. This isn’t going to be a huge problem at first, but if they are allowed to stick around for any real amount of time, they are going to begin to decompose. That’s when your entire gutter system runs the risk of getting clogged.

Clogged gutters and downspouts will cause water backups, and water backups have a nasty little habit of worming their way into your home one way or another. And we all know just how dangerous water damage can be. Even if it starts off pretty small, it can quickly spiral out of control if not addressed.

Clogged gutters will ruin your natural drainage system

Gutters serve more purposes than simply making sure that water is kept entirely out of your home.

Gutter and downspout systems are also designed to work with the way that your home is situated on the land. They allow you to effortlessly drain excess rainwater away from your home so that your basement doesn’t end up turning into a swimming pool you never intended to have in the first place.

Downspouts that get rerouted because of clogged gutters are going to cause a nightmare situation almost immediately (and certainly in the spring when the snow begins to melt). Unless you are excited to run a sump pump all year round you’re going to want to make sure that you take the time to clean things out properly.

In addition to cleaning out your gutters, schedule a visit from the Ottawa roofing experts at Lucas Contracting to make sure your gutters and downspouts are in proper working order.

3 Tips to Make Your Roof Last

By | Energy Efficiency, Renovations, Roof Inspection, Roofing | No Comments

It is of the utmost importance that you make sure your roof is in the best possible condition. If not, you run the risk of having to do a complete tear off and replacement. This kind of intensive project can cost you countless thousands that you could have spent elsewhere.

Thankfully, it isn’t all that difficult to maintain your roof (the roof you have right now) to help stretch its longevity a bit. This is especially true when you know exactly what you’re doing or hire a trusted Ottawa roofing company like Lucas Contracting. We are going to give you three different tips to make your roof last and last. These tips are going to save you a boatload of money (not to mention time, headache, and hassle) just by putting them into action.

Shall we jump right in?

Clean up your gutters every four months or so

One of the easiest things that you’ll be able to do dramatically extend the longevity of your roof is to simply clean out your gutters on a routine basis. Swabbing out your gutters every four months or so means that you’ll have to give up three weekends a year to really get the job done right. But you’ll be able to save thousands and thousands of dollars on costly roof repairs. It’s definitely worth it. If you’d rather spend your weekend lounging, an Ottawa roofing company like Lucas Contracting can handle the task with ease.

Remove debris from your shingles

No matter where your home is situated, the odds are pretty good that you’re going to have at least some debris collect upon your roof every year. Leaves, animal drops, dust, and random neighbourhood debris collects on your roof.

While a bit of debris isn’t going to be a nightmare situation, if you allow the debris to continue to collect things can really start to spiral out of control. Make sure that you’re power washing off the debris on your roof every year (hopefully right after spring), and your roof will last at least a couple of years longer than it would have otherwise.

Get rid of any growth

Finally, it’s important that you make sure there is no living organic material on your roof that could cause it to weaken structurally or as far as weatherproofing is concerned.

Moss growing on your roof might not seem like all that big of a deal at first, but if it continues to grow, it’s going to work to destroy your roof from the outside in, causing leaks and structural problems all over the place.

These three tips and the help of your Ottawa roofing company will ensure that your roof lasts for years – even decades – to come.

The Importance of Scheduling a Roof Inspection

The Importance of Scheduling A Roof Inspection

By | Roof Inspection, Roofing | No Comments

One of the most ignored parts of the home is the roof. Granted, it can be hard to see and as a result stay out of our minds. However, one of the leading reasons why people are disinclined to get a roof inspection is because of the prices associated with roof work. Much higher than most other exterior work done on the home, many people put it off for as long as possible before addressing the issue. Let’s take a moment to review why scheduling a roof inspection is so important.

  1. Reduce Future Costs

When it comes to roofs, the sooner you identify and fix a problem, the more money you will save in the long run. Small problems can gradually worsen over time, as heat, moisture, and a myriad of other agitators can make use of a tiny opening and cause a lot of damage. In addition to gradually costing you more money, you will also lose roof integrity, increasing the chances of leaks. There is also the chance that if something was to land on your roof, that it would collapse through in its weakened state as opposed to holding strong. Finally, there is the eventual risk of a roof collapse and repair that would run thousands to tens of thousands of dollars in cost.

  1. Venting Money Out Of Your Roof

Scheduling a roof inspection is often the first thing people do to save money.  Like it or not, if you have not recently had your roof replaced, then it may be the primary means that heating and cooling leaves your house. This results in you spending more money over time trying to keep your house the right temperature, costing you more in bills. With a roof inspection, a trained and qualified individual will carefully inspect the exterior of your roof as well as your attic to see if and where there are any problems like heat/cooling loss. By getting the work done now, you can save yourself hundreds of dollars in expenses in the future.

  1. Peace of Mind

The roof has often been considered the housing equivalent of a toothache. No matter how much a tooth may bother us, we are generally inclined to ignore it and hope that it will go away on its own. By having your roof inspected, you provide yourself with a peace of mind that every homeowner deserves. With their careful attention to detail and consultation, a professional roofer will be able to tell you what if anything is wrong. Armed with this knowledge, you will be able to start taking the necessary steps to fix any problems.

Contact Lucas Contracting today to schedule a roof inspection on your home or commercial property.

6 Signs Your Home Needs Roof Repair

By | Blog, Roofing | No Comments

You have a roof over your head, yet, oddly enough, it can be easy to forget about the roof itself when you’re constantly focusing on upgrades and renovations to the inside of your home and your backyard. We don’t expect you to spend hours assessing the state of your homes’ roof – which is why Lucas Contracting has provided some tips below to help you determine if the time has come for your roof to be repaired or replaced! Keep an eye out for some of the following signs and see if it’s time to contact your roofing company.

There are loose or missing roof shingles: Ottawa is known for some pretty drastic changes in weather and some of these extreme weather conditions can cause roof shingles to separate from your roof. You’ll be able to notice if this is starting to happen when you see cracks or blisters in the shingles, or if the shingles are beginning to curl off of your roof.

You’ve noticed loose, exposed, or missing nails: Upon closer inspection, if you notice that some nails have gone missing, it can only mean that they have left holes behind in your roof. Rain or snow can leak into these holes and cause significant water damage on the inside of your home. Contact your roofing company before your home gets exposed to this type of damage.

There is some interior water damage: If you begin to notice water stains on your ceilings or drops of water on your floor when it rains, your situation may be more urgent. Contact your roofing company as soon as possible for further inspection.

You’ve noticed structural changes: If you notice that your roof is slanted differently than usual, it’s possible that it is weakening and giving into pressure from the moisture that was collected from different elements. It is also possible that too many layers of shingles have been added over top of each other over time. If this is the case, you may need to replace your roof.

Your gutters are spilling over: After a rainy spring season in Ottawa, your gutters may start overflowing if they haven’t been cleaned properly. This can lead to water damage on your roof as your gutter pulls away from the roofing structure.

Your heating or cooling bills have changed: If you are noticing any drastic differences in your heating or air conditioning bills, it’s possible that there is a leak in your roof that is letting unwanted air in and out of your home.

If you notice any of these six signs, your home may need roof repair. Contact Lucas Contracting to schedule a consultation.
